Umphrey’s McGee Welcomes Corey Frye For ‘Daffodils’ Cover In Indianapolis

Jam stalwarts Umphrey’s McGee continued a run of shows with up-and-coming soul-jam act The Main Squeeze on Friday night at White River State Park in Indianapolis. One highlight of the night came when The Main Squeeze frontman Corey Frye emerged during UM’s second set to lead the band on a cover of Mark Ronson’s “Daffodils.”
Umphrey’s treated fans at a venue not far from where the band was formed in South Bend to a first set “Mantis” sandwich. They opened with the short “Preamble” as UM does their 2009 studio album Mantis before lighting into the title track. “Speak Up,” “Higgins” and “Hajimemashite” were among the songs performed between the beginning of “Mantis” and its conclusion. Another tune worked in was “Passing,” which hadn’t been played since March 5, 2015 – a span of 136 shows. Umphrey’s blazed a standout “Nothing Too Fancy” just before concluding the first set with the end of “Mantis.”
Fan favorites “The Floor” and “Partyin’ Peeps” kicked off the second set ahead of a typically exploratory “Ocean Billy.” Umphrey’s fit the old school version of “Cut The Cable” within “Ocean Billy.” The set then continued with Frye coming out to lead “Daffodils,” a cover UM debuted back on New Year’s Eve in Denver. From there, the six-piece ended the set with “Conduit,” the end of “Nothing Too Fancy” and the festive “40’s Theme.” Umphrey’s put a cap on the evening with a cover of Wings’ Live & Let Die followed by the end of a “1348” started in the first set. Tonight, UM ends their latest string of summer shows with a performance at Lousiville’s Iroquois Amphitheatre.
