Umphrey’s McGee Plays ‘The Police’ Themed Halloween Show In Washington DC
By Andy Kahn Nov 1, 2019 • 7:51 am PDT

Umphrey’s McGee wore police costumes and played The Police covers — including debuts and a bust out — during their Halloween concert at The Anthem in Washington D.C. A total of six new The Police covers were played across the evening’s two sets and encore, alongside another last played in 2010.
Following the opening set by Star Kitchen whose members were dressed in prison gear, the law enforcement-clad members of UM opened the first set with the debut of The Police’s “Synchronicity II,” after which guitarist Brendan Bayliss offered congratulations to the fans of the World Series champion Washington Nationals. UM then bridged “Bridgeless” with “Ocean Billy” which led into a deep improvisation. After the jam came the debut of The Police’s “Reggatta de Blanc.” Next was “Utopian Fir” with the police sirens of “The Fuzz” dropped within. The set closed with “Night Nurse” segueing into UM’s first “Message In A Bottle” since August 12, 2010 (a gap of 931 shows).
The instrumental “Dump City” opened the second set with a heavy dose of improvisation, followed by the first Umphrey’ McGee performance of The Police’s “Spirits in the Material World.” The set continued with an expansive “Draconian,” complete with “Crazy Train” teases, transitioning into “Kula.” Another debut, “Can’t Stand Losing You” came next, before stretching out another instrumental, “Nothing Too Fancy.” The classic led into another The Police debut, “King Of Pain.” A return to “Bridgeless” closed out the second half.
One final The Police debut, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” began the encore. Umphrey’s segued into their heartfelt original “Hajimemashite” to close out the show. Watch the first and second set openers via TourGigs below:
