Umphrey’s McGee Plays Pair Of Debut Covers In Peoria

Umphrey’s McGee played in Peoria, Illinois on gorgeous summer evening Sunday at The Landing stage alongside the Illinois River. The two set concert featured a blend of newer and classic material as well as the debuts of a pair of covers.

Umphrey’s McGee assembled onstage and lit into the instrumental prog rocker “Eat” that quickly developed into the night’s first burst of improvisation. Another nice jam developed out of the ensuing “Push The Pig” that eventually landed on “Cut Off.” Next came just the second rendition “Onward & Upward” since it’s debut at UMBowl V in May 2014, followed by the second performance of the year of the lyric-less “The Pequod.” The first set on Sunday drew to a close with “Conduit.”

“All Things Ninja” broke open the second set with angular instrumental twists and turns that included lengthy solos by both guitarist Jake Cinninger and drummer Kris Myers. Guitarist Brendan Bayliss led the ensemble through a subsequent “Attachments” and had his own turn in the soloing spotlight during an adventurous “2×2.” UM followed that classic with another longtime favorite, offering a typically well-jammed take on “Utopian Fir” which featured their debut of Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” covered within. Set two progressed with rocking editions of “Kula” and “Wappy Sprayberry” and closed with Myers singing their debut of Audioslave’s “Cochise.” Blissful instrumental “End Of The Road” started the encore and was coupled with a show closing take on the “Out Of Order.”
