Umphrey’s McGee Fits Rarities Into Oakland Show

Umphrey’s McGee kicked off the West Coast leg of their “Wax On, Wax Off Tour” on Friday at the Fox Theater in Oakland. The prog-jam rockers worked in rare covers from both The Beatles and Led Zeppelin during their two-set evening in the Bay Area.
The six-piece act opened with an impressive seamless run that saw them string together the 2019 debut of “Gurgle” with setlist staples “Resolution” and “2nd Self.” Just the third attempt at “Believe The Lie” in the last 150 shows followed. Umphrey’s went with back-to-back songs from The Beatles next. First up, they dusted off “Dig A Pony” for the first time since April 27, 2017 and third since 2008. The cut from Let It Be segued straight into “Tomorrow Never Knows,” which was revived during their three-night stand in Brooklyn after sitting untouched since 2016. Death By Stereo’s “Miami Virtue” put a cap on the jam-filled run with “JaJunk” bringing their opening frame to a close.

Umphrey’s McGee paired longtime fan-favorites “All In Time” with “Wife Soup” to get their second stanza off the ground. “Maybe Someday” was dropped in the middle of “Ocean Billy” as the sextet then served up just their third-ever version of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times, Bad Times.” The band debuted the song with Jason Bonham on drums at last summer’s Lockn’ Festival. The semi-rarity “Women Wine & Song” and a return back to “All In Time” helped close out the set. “Puppet String” was tapped for Umphrey’s lone encore last night in Oakland.
