Umphrey’s McGee kicked off their Hindsight 20/20 Winter Tour with the first of two concerts at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Friday night. The band welcomed guest vocalist Kanika Moore to help honor Rush drummer Neil Peart who passed away on January 7.

UM got things underway with relatively new song, “Unsung Hero,” for just the sixth time since debuting the tune on May 25, 2019 at Summer Camp. “Unsung Hero” then led into “JaJunk” which in turn segued into a well-jammed “Ocean Billy.” “Speak Up” followed ahead of the metal-tinged “Wizard Burial Ground” which began with a “More Than Words” tease in a nod to hard rock heroes Extreme. Umph then moved into “Deeper” and “Den” before returning to “WBG.” Next, the band welcomed Kanika Moore of Doom Flamingo, the side project of UM bassist Ryan Stasik, to sing Rush’s “Anthem” from the legendary band’s 1975 album Fly By Night to pay tribute to Peart and to bring the first frame to a close. While the performance marked the first time Umphrey’s played “Anthem,” the band has covered Rush’s “YYZ” in their early days.

The second set began with another new tune in “Suxity,” for just the second time since debuting the song during their 2019 New Year’s run in Denver, before the band returned to “JaJunk.” The classic “Wappy Sprayberry” followed and contained a tease of The Rolling Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” as well as an extensive jam that contained elements of “Jumpin Jack Flash.” The Stones section then led into more vintage material with “Mulche’s Odyessy” that also saw its fair share of exploration. The expansive jams continued on “Half-Delayed,” which headed into “It Doesn’t Matter” to close out the second set.

For the encore, a lone Brendan Bayliss emerged to begin the opening guitar strains of “The Weight Around,” with the rest of the band trickling in before UM transitioned into “The Silent Type,” which featured a jam on Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” to cap off the evening.
