moe. & Umphrey’s McGee Keep Collaborations Coming In New York City & New England

moe. and Umphrey's McGee's joint moe.mentUM Tour hit New York City on Friday (June 12); Hyannis, Massachusetts on Saturday (June 13) and Hampton Beach, New Hampshire on Sunday (June 14). Each show saw the two bands connect in various configurations for extended encores.

On Friday, Umphrey’s McGee kicked off the action at the picturesque Rooftop at Pier 17. The band, currently touring without guitarist Jake Cinninger, made it through five songs in 45 minutes before a passing storm forced them off the stage. UM’s abbreviated frame began with a seamless run of “Attachments,” “Staircase” and “The Floor.” Longtime staples “The Triple Wide” and “Hajimemashite” were paired to close the rain-shortened set.

After an hour-long delay, the show moved forward with a 70-minute moe. set. Keyboardist Nate Wilson guided the band through “Yellow Tigers” ahead of bassist Rob Derhak leading “Buster.” A big surprise came next as guitarist Chuck Garvey fronted moe.’s first performance of The Conch’s “Where Does The Time Go” since 2021.

The geographically-appropriate “New York City” followed the break out. Guitarist Suke Cerulo came out after “A Band In The Sky” to join moe. on “Threw It All Away.” Cerulo kept Garvey’s seat warm when Chuck stepped away from the road between the fall of 2021 and the end of 2022 to recover from a stroke. moe. then played “Bat Country” and the classic “Plane Crash” to end the set.

When moe. returned for the encore they were joined by UM guitarist Brendan Bayliss, keyboardist Joel Cummins and percussionist Andy Farag. Bayliss traded licks with Garvey on moe. original “Captain America” before fronting the ensemble on his band’s song “The Silent Type.” Members of both bands then loaded the stage along with Andy Frasco as well as TAUK guitarist Matt Jalbert and keyboardist Alric “A.C.” Carter for a joyous cover of Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime.”

Bayliss, Frasco, Cummins and Farag stuck around to augment moe. on classic rock radio staples “Ophelia” by The Band and “I Wanna Be Sedated” by the Ramones to close the show. While UM’s set was cut short, the extended encore helped give attendees their monies worth.

The moe.mentUM Tour’s two-show swing across New England began on Saturday at Cape Cod Melody Tent. moe. treated Massachusetts fans to a 90-minute set. The bulk of the frame was devoted to a run linking “Happy Hour Hero,” “Seat Of My Pants,” “Sensory Deprivation Bank,” “All Roads Lead To Home” and “ATL.” Other highlights included a take on Jethro Tull’s “Locomotive Break” and a version of the beloved “Rebubula” featuring “Four” within.

Umphrey’s took the stage next with a 90-minute set of their own. The five-piece iteration also went heavy on seamless sequences. A pair of song sandwiches were among standout moments as “Resolution” fell between parts of “1348” and “Nothing Too Fancy” provided the bread for a filling of “Plunger” and “Bennie & The Jets.”

moe.’s Al Schnier, Chuck Garvey, Rob Derhak and percussionist Jim Loughlin teamed with Umphrey’s — sans bassist Ryan Stasik — to open the collaborative encore in Hyannis with “Bring You Down.” Stasik swapped in for Derhak and Garvey vacated the stage for “Bad Friday” before the show closed with Al, Chuck, Rob and Jim sitting in on a cover of Blue Öyster Cult’s “Godzilla.”

The bands wrapped the weekend last night at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom. moe. hit first with an old school setlist. “32 Things,” “Okayalright,” “Not Coming Down,” “Spine Of Dog” were connected to get their performance underway. “Kyle’s Song” then gave way to “Three Eyed Serpent,” which bled into “Space Truckin'” ahead of “Meat.” Standalone versions of “Wind It Up” and “Downward Facing Dog” ended moe.’s time on stage.

Umphrey’s picked the instrumental intro “Nipple Trix” to open. “Prowler” followed along with “Domino Theory.” Up next was “2nd Self” and a “Der Bluten Kat” that encompassed “Push The Pig.” UM ended their set with sibling songs “Cemetery Walk” and “Cemetery Walk II.”

The collaborative encore in New Hampshire started with Brendan Bayliss and Al Schnier linking up for acoustic duets on “She Sends Me” and “Fuck Her Gently.” While the former is a recently revived moe. original, the latter is a Tenacious D cover. Umphrey’s then took the stage with Chuck Garvey and Jim Loughlin to perform “In The Kitchen.” moe. drummer Vinnie Amico tagged in for UM’s Scotty Zwang before a transition into Pink Floyd’s “Young Lust.” Scotty moved over to percussion with Loughlin and Farag ahead of the assembled musicians finishing “In The Kitchen” to end the concert and weekend.

The moe.mentUM Tour resumes on Wednesday, June 17 in Baltimore. Umphrey’s McGee and moe. will hit venues along the East Coast and into the Midwest through August 15.
