Umphrey’s McGee rolled into The ELM in Bozeman, Montana on Wednesday. UM welcomed Bozeman-based singer-songwriter Madeline Hawthorne to sing on a cover of ’ “Whitehouse Road.”
Umphrey’s McGee — guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss, bassist Ryan Stasik, keyboardist Joel Cummins, percussionist Andy Farag and drummer Kris Myers — launched the show with “Small Strides” from their 2023 LP, Asking For A Friend. The vintage “Example 1” came next before the band linked up “The Linear” and “Uncle Wally.”

A substantial “Hurt Bird Bath” came next ahead of the mellow instrumental “The Pequod.” After “Educated Guess,” UM brought out Madeline Hawthorne for “Whitehouse Road.” The country-rocker originally appears on Tyler Childers’ 2017 album Purgatory. Hawthorne fronted the band on “Whitehouse Road” and added some serious grit and twang to the tune.
Set two kicked off with a pairing of 2023 single “Staircase” before the band embarked on a “Believe the Lie” journey. UM then queued up “Puppet String” before heading into “Day Nurse.” Next, the sextet fit a rare cover of Wang Chung’s “Dance Hall Days” within “Utopian Fir” (out of the nine times UM has played “Dance Hall Days” since 2012, two have been at The ELM in Bozeman, as per All Things Umphreys).
“Little Gift” then gave way to the conclusion of “Puppet String.” Umphrey’s McGee returned to encore with the classic “In The Kitchen.”
