Umphrey’s McGee Welcomes Kyle Hollingsworth, Jeff Coffin & Nicholas Gerlach In Denver

Umphrey’s McGee resumed their New Year’s Run 2019 at The Fillmore Auditorium in Denver on Monday night. The band delivered a one-song first set filled with improvisation and guest appearances by The String Cheese Incident’s Kyle Hollingsworth and Dave Matthews Band’s Jeff Coffin. UM also brought out Nicholas Gerlach during last evening’s second set and encore.

Umphrey’s McGee fan “SK” wished for a “full set of improv” for Christmas and last night the band gifted the petitioner of Santa Claus. The show began with guitarist Jake Cinninger’s “Ringo” and that would be the lone song played in the first half. As UM began to jam, guitarist Brendan Bayliss’ improvised lyrics. Hollingsworth – whose solo band opened the show – then emerged to join Joel Cummins on keys. Hollingsworth exited as the band progressed back to “Ringo.” Following that sequence, Coffin (who will likely appear with UM tonight) emerged to add saxophone to another portion of improvising. Coffin then left and the band returned to “Ringo.”

The second set started with an unfinished “1348” segueing into the classic “Hajimemashite.” “Miami Virtue” followed before a bust out of Billy Joel’s “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” which had only previously been covered three times, the most recent coming in 2010. The rarity was accompanied by Gerlach on saxophone. “Remind Me” and a pairing of “The Linear” into “Bridgeless” closed out the set. Gerlach was back for the encore opening “Booth Love.” A return to the earlier-started “1348” brought an end to the show.
