Earlier this summer Umphrey’s McGee was forced to end their headlining show the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island early due to safety concerns when heavy rain, high winds and hail that moved through Chicago. Shortly after the weather-shortened show the prog-jam rockers announced that they would return to the venue at a later day to play for their hometown fans. Last night, Umphrey’s made good on that promise returning the venue at Northerly Island for a special three set show, that saw the band offer up an acoustic set prior to two electric ones.
The six-piece kicked off the acoustic portion of their night with “Nemo” > “Sweetness” > “Nemo” and “Upward.” Umphrey’s next welcomed out Mike Racky, who has performed with Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger at their annual acoustic Christmas shows. The lap steel player assisted the band on “Gone For Good,” “Memories Of Home,” “Susanah,” a cover of Ween’s “Freedom Of ’76,” and “In The Kitchen.”
The electric portion got underway with the pairing of “Wappy Sprayberry” > “Crucial Taunt” and saw the band work their way through “Passing,” “JaJunk” > “Higgens,” “Make It Right,” “Remind Me” > “JaJunk” during last night’s middle set. Umphrey’s third set kicked off with “Divisions” and featured takes on “The Floor,” “Ringo,” “The Triple Wide,” before the band offered up a debut cover of the 1980s classic “Hold Me Now.” The Thompson Twins‘ tune, from their 1984 debut album Into The Gap, segued into the ending portion of “The Mantis,” with “Wizard Burial Ground” following to bring the set to an end. The band returned to the stage with a pairing of “Day Nurse” > “Division” to close out the three set affair.
Umphrey’s McGee returns to the road next month for a trio of New York City-area shows, with two at the Capitol Theatre and a more intimate gig at Brooklyn Bowl.
