Umphrey’s McGee Focuses On Bust Outs & Rarities In Knoxville

Chicago sextet Umphrey’s McGee continues to dig deep into their massive repertoire over the course of the summer. Last night’s concert at the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville featured three songs the six-piece hadn’t played in at least 100 shows as well as two additional tunes that had gone missing for at least 43 gigs.

Umphrey’s opened with the instrumental “Depth Charge,” which had been shelved since May 4, 2014 – a span of 228 shows. More rarities followed as the first “Go To Hell” since Summer Camp came next along with the year’s third “The Pequod” and fourth “Liquid.” Following “Similar Skin” was the evening’s second biggest bust out, a cover of Waylon Jennings’ “Good Ol’ Boys” aka the theme to Dukes Of Hazzard. “Forks” then made its fourth appearance since 2013 before giving way to a set-closing sequence of “Hangover” and “Hurt Bird Bath.”

Friday’s second set featured more of the same as the instrumental “You Got The Wrong Guy” made a rare appearance to open the closing stanza. The first-ever “All In Time” > “October Rain” > “All In Time” came next and was just the third time the instrumental “October Rain” was played outside of the opener slot. Another rarity followed as UM unleashed just the second “Mullet (Over)” of 2016. Guitarist Brendan Bayliss utilized a wine bottle as a slide during “Mullet (Over).” An extended “Plunger” > “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” gave way to a standout “Phil’s Farm” > “Young Lust” > “Phil’s Farm” sandwich. Umphrey’s had last played “Young Lust,” a Pink Floyd cover way back on June 4, 2015 – a span of 116 shows. “Wife Soup” closed the second set, while “Rocker Part 2” served as encore.
