Umphrey’s McGee Dusts Off Steely Dan Cover In Asbury Park

Jam stalwarts Umphrey’s McGee ended a brief Northeast swing with a Sunday night show at Stone Pony Summerstage in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The six-piece delivered two career-spanning sets that included the return of a long-lost Steely Dan cover as well as a reprise of said cover within the encore.
Umphrey’s opened Sunday’s show with “Bathing Digits” followed by the expansive “Hurt Bird Bath.” Old favorites “Resolution” and “Uncle Wally” came next along with a cover of Ween’s “Transdermal Celebration.” UM ended last night’s first set with a “Little Gift” > “Blue Echo” > “Mulche’s Odyssey” sequence.”
The biggest surprise of the night came to start the second frame, as Umphrey’s busted out a cover of Steely Dan’s “Hey Nineteen.” The sextet hadn’t played “Hey Nineteen” since February 14, 2015. UM jammed out the tune and worked a lyrical interlude as well as a reference to NJ Governor Chris Christie. Oldies “Out Of Order,” “Padgett’s Profile” and “Hajimemashite” followed the Steely Dan cover. “Night Nurse” then led into an adventurous “In The Kitchen.” The night’s other bust out came in the form of “Non-Compilance,” which made its first appearance since April 14, 2016. “Bad Friday” closed out the second set.” For the encore, UM treated the Jersey Shore crowd to “Syncopated Strangers” complete with the end of “Hey Nineteen” within.
