Umphrey’s McGee Debut Talking Heads Cover

By Scott Bernstein Aug 19, 2015 12:05 pm PDT

On Friday night Umphrey’s McGee returned to Ravinia in Highland Park, Illinois for a performance that featured a number of special guests including the Chicago Mass Choir, who had previously collaborated with the group on December 31, 2008 and November 26, 2011. Among the songs performed by UM and the Choir was a gorgeous cover of Talking Heads’ 1981 smash “Once In A Lifetime.”

Guitarist Brendan Bayliss handled lead vocals on the UM debut of “Once In A Lifetime.” Bayliss threw in a local reference by swapping in “Lake Michigan” for “the ocean” in the lyric “There is water at the bottom of Lake Michigan.” Watch fan-shot footage of the cover thanks to Vince Wiscons:

Friday’s show also included Umphrey’s first rendition of “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac since 2003. The band was joined by vocalist Michelle Hallman for the bust out. Here’s fan-shot footage of “Rhiannon” thanks to jlooty:

Umphrey’s returns to the road tomorrow for a show at The Fillmore Charlotte. Webcasts of tomorrow’s show as well as all four upcoming UM gigs are available.
