Umphrey’s McGee’s Brendan Bayliss Covers Neil Young, Steely Dan, Wilco & More For ‘Wine Not?’

Umphrey’s McGee’s Brendan Bayliss continued his Wine Not? livestream series on Friday night. The guitarist delivered covers of Neil Young, Steely Dan, Wilco and more for the internet audience.

Bayliss greeted everyone by revealing that he’s growing his mustache again. “I think once I shaved, everything kinda got weird,” he said, owning the regrowth to superstition. “Everything happens in threes…this is my third mustache.” BB kicked off the music with UM’s “Words followed by the pandemic appropriate Police song “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” before reeling off a litany of Umphrey’s tunes in “Morning Song,” “Loose Ends” and “Ocean Billy,” which led into LCD Soundsystem’s “I Can Change.”

Brendan’s wife Annie Bayliss then joined in to help out on Wilco’s “Jesus Etc.” before Brendan delivered the Duane Allman-composed Allman Brothers Band instrumental, “Little Martha.” While Annie is a regular guest (not to mention the producer) on Wine Not?, the July 17 edition featured the most guests the livestream has seen beginning with The Bayliss’s neighbor T-Bird adding harmonica on “Get In Line,” a tune from Brendan and the late great Jeff Austin’s collaborative project, 30db. Annie would rejoin the fun along with another neighbor, Pat Muldoon (guitar), for a regular campfire version of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” with T-Bird on harmonica and the song’s signature broom sweeps. Muldoon would stay on for the Steely Dan classic “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” before Annie and Brendan closed things out as a duo on Umphrey’s “Hajimemashite” and Percy Sledge’s “You Really Got A Hold On Me.”
