Umphrey’s McGee pulled into Knoxville, Tennessee on Thursday for a show at The Mill & Mine. In the wake of Aston “Family Man” Barrett's death last Saturday (February 3), the sextet dusted off a cover of Bob Marley’s “Kinky Reggae” during the second set.

Aston “Family Man” Barrett was crucial to Bob Marley & The Wailers’ sound as bassist, co-producer and bandleader. Barrett died at age 77 on Saturday in Miami due to heart failure after suffering through a series of strokes. The news of “Family Man’s” death and the cause of his passing was confirmed by his son Aston Barrett Jr.

Written by Bob Marley in collaboration with members of The Wailers, “Kinky Reggae” was initially released by the reggae icon and his band on their 1973 studio album, Catch A Fire. The LP was Bob Marley & The Wailers’ first for Island/Tuff Gong, the label that issued the rest of the group’s output through Marley’s death and the posthumous Confrontation in 1983.

Umphrey’s McGee debuted their faithful “Kinky Reggae” rendition on June 23, 2000. The cover was played regularly by the sextet over the two years that followed. Outside of a brief return to the rotation in 2005, “Kinky Reggae” has only been performed by UM nine times since May 3, 2002. The song dedicated to Aston “Family Man” Barrett by guitarist Brendan Bayliss on Thursday was last covered by Umphrey’s McGee on April 17, 2015 — a span of 684 shows.

Umphrey’s McGee – Bayliss, guitarist Jake Cinninger, bassist Ryan Stasik, percussionist Andy Farag, keyboardist Joel Cummins and drummer Kris Myers — has been on a hot streak in 2024 since Myers returned from shoulder surgery. Last night’s show continued that trend with highlights including a pair of nurses — “Day Nurse” in the first set and “Night Nurse” amid “Der Bluten Kat” in the second — an exploratory “Blue Echo,” rare “Room To Breathe” and extended “Mulche’s Odyssey” encore.

The band hits MegaCorp Pavilion in Newport, Kentucky tonight and The Pageant in St. Louis on Saturday. Umphrey’s then spends next week/weekend in Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania.
