Umphrey’s McGee came to KEMBA Live in Columbus, Ohio on Friday. The band broke out their cover of The Beatles deep cut “Flying” toward the end of the concert.

A paring of instrumentals “Catshot” and “Den” opened the show. “It’s Not Your Fault” off UM’s 2023 album Asking For A Friend followed before the band headed into “Conduit.”

Instrumental “Number 5” surpassed the 11-minute mark and prefaced “Wellwishers.” A coupling of “Miami Virtue” and “Mulche’s Odyssey” — the latter originally from guitarist Jake Cinninger’s Ali Baba’s Tahini catalog — wrapped the first frame.

Set two contained classic songs from the UM catalog beginning with a 19-minute “Hurt Bird Bath.” The band kept up the jamming on “Higgins” from which emerged “Walletsworth” followed by another Ali Baba’s tune, the vintage “Professor Wormbog.”

“Intentions Clear” off the band’s 2006 LP, Safety In Numbers, came next. UM then winged into “Flying.” The wordless Beatles obscurity appears on the Fab Four’s late 1967 album Magical Mystery Tour.

Umphrey’s McGee debuted “Flying” way back on December 18, 1999 in Chicago, as per All Things Umphreys. UM has played the song 34 times over the course of 25 years with roughly a quarter of those plays coming in the year 2000 and most of them in the ensuing decade. The Columbia 2024 “Flying” marked the first performance of the tune since January 12, 2018 for a gap of 434 shows.

Following “Flying,” oldie “Slacker” sealed the second set. “Cut The Cable” would punctuate the concert as the evening’s lone encore. Listen to official audio of UM’s Columbia concert via nugs.net below:
