Umphrey’s And STS9 Headline Night Two Of Mayan Holidaze

The first night of Mayan Holidaze in Puerto Morelos, Mexico was a rainy affair that saw most bands perform inside, but the weather improved for Night Two as Umphrey’s McGee and STS9 each played two sets on the beach.

STS9 took the stage on the beach first for their initial performance of the festival. Dominic Lalli of Big Gigantic came out towards the end of the first set to add sax to “Grow.” The 9-song opening stanza also saw the band perform the title track off 2011’s When The Dust Settles and fan favorite “Moon Socket,” while the second set came to a climax with “Inspire Strikes Back.” Sound Tribe wrapped up their performance with a “Breathe In” encore.

Umphrey’s McGee delivered two sets on the beach starting around midnight. An improv-heavy first set included takes on “1348,” “Blue Echo” and “Resolution” as well as a set-closing cover of “Eminence Front” by The Who. Set Two started off with “Nothing Too Fancy” and saw the sextet work “Hajimemashite” into the middle of “In The Kitchen.” Though Brendan Bayliss had sung the tune in Spanish at a past Mexican performance, he stuck with the English version last night. UM wrapped up the show with their “Exodus During Wartime” mash-up and the conclusion of “Nothing Too Fancy,” both of which featured “Carol Of The Bells” teases.
