U2 Starts European Leg Of World Tour

After a break of more than a month Irish rockers U2 began the European leg of Innocence + Experience World Tour last night in Turin, Italy. Rolling Stone reports that U2’s performance at Palasport Olimpic included many pleas from Bono about the Syrian refugee crisis Europeans are struggling with. The singer made many lyric changes throughout the show to reference the refugee crisis and asked “What do you want? A Europe with its heart and its borders closed to mercy? Or a Europe with its heart open? What do you want? A place called home” in “Where The Streets Have No Name.”

Setlist-wise the big story from Turin was the tour debut of “Zooropa,” which came within “Where The Streets Have No Name.” As noted by Rolling Stone, “Zooropa’s” lyrics had extra meaning in the light of the Syrian refugee situation especially the lines “And I have no compass and I have no map. And I have no reasons, no reasons to get back.” As usual Bono & Co. worked many brief cover fragments into the set including “God Save The Queen,” “I Can See For Miles” and “Send In The Clowns.” The main set also saw just the third performance of “October” since 1989.
