Phish’s Trey Anastasio is the subject of Alive Again, a newly launched, limited series podcast from JamBase partner, Osiris Media. The first Alive Again episode, “The Architect,” is available to stream on all major podcasting platforms.

Anastasio can be heard throughout the first episode discussing various people and moments that impacted his career. He talks about childhood drum lessons that eventually lead to learning to play classical guitar. Anastasio’s longtime friend and songwriting partner Tom Marshall recalls some of the early songs the pair wrote while adolescents.

Trey ticks through some of the classic rock bands that were influential on his early playing. He reveals that in college, he failed a music theory class. Also in college, Anastasio met his mentor Ernie Stires, who was integral in Anastasio’s songwriting development. Recent Anastasio collaborator, pianist Jeff Tanski, makes a cameo on the episode and performs “Split Open And Melt” from the original sheet music. Bassist Oteil Burbridge also makes a brief appearance to talk about his experience participating in Anastasio’s 1996 Surrender To The Air project.

Frank Zappa was one of the influential musicians Anastasio admired. Trey talks about seeing several Zappa shows, and that Frank’s son Dweezil Zappa had played his dad Phish’s album, Rift, earning the approval of his legendary father. Anastasio also talks about seeing King Sunny Ade in the early-1980s and how that concert planted a seed for what became the Trey Anastasio Band.

TAB members Jennifer Hartswick, Ray Paczkowski and Russ Lawton make appearances on the episode. Anastasio’s brother-in-law Kevin Statesir comes on to talk about opening the Burlington, Vermont club Higher Ground and the 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes show that opened the venue in 1998. The concert marked the first time Anastasio performed with Lawton and bassist Tony Markellis, who sadly died in April, as the pair would become original members of TAB. Anastasio shares fond memories of Markellis, speaking highly of his friend and musician companion.
