Umphrey’s McGee and moe. joined forces in the Southeast this past weekend to wrap the first half of their moe.mentUM Summer Tour. Shows spread across the Carolinas ended with collaborative encores, with a visit to Alabama cut short due to weather.
The run resumed after a two-week break on Thursday, July 9 at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo, North Carolina. moe. went on first and bookended their set with jam vehicles “Timmy Tucker” and “Opium.” Also of note, the Buffalo-birth band slipped a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One” within “Four.”
Umphrey’s McGee followed by serving up a tease-heavy performance. The sextet connected “Attachments,” “Prowler” and “2nd Self” to start before linking “Wappy Sprayberry” with “August.” After standalone performances of “Seasons,” “Night Nurse” and “Higgins,” UM worked “Much Obliged” into a cover of Fugazi’s “Waiting Room” to bring their set to a close.
The collaborative encore began with UM delivering a take on Men At Work’s ’80s classic “Down Under” augmented by moe.’s Vinnie Amico on drums, Chuck Garvey on guitar and Nate Wilson on flute. Amico then replaced Scotty Zwang on drums and Garvey stuck around for a show-closing version of “The Silent Type.”
On Friday, moe. and Umphrey’s McGee pulled into Charlotte for a show at TD Amphitheater Ballantyne. This time UM were up first as they devoted the first 26 minutes of the show to a sequence of “Piranhas” and “Day Nurse.” Well-jammed versions of “Out Of Order,” “Similar Skin” and “Hurt Bird Bath” followed along with a cover of Al Green’s “Take Me To The River.” The five-piece offered “Pure Saturation” and “Hiccup” to wrap the 86-minute set.
moe. also frontloaded their set with a lengthy run of “Billy Goat,” “Bullet” and “Skitchin’ Buffalo.” The lone cover of the frame came a few songs later in a Nate Wilson-fronted take on “Can’t Find My Way Home” by Blind Faith, which bled into fan-favorite “Buster.”
Umphrey’s keyboardist Joel Cummins and percussionist Andy Farag accompanied moe. on “Happy Hour Hero” to get the encore underway. The ensuing “Immigrant Song” saw Ryan Stasik step in for Rob Derhak on bass, Amico move to percussion with Andy Farag and Jim Loughlin and Zwang hop behind the kit. While Al Schnier was offstage for the Led Zeppelin favorite, Rob Derhak and his daughter Emma handled backing vocals.
Lightning brought an early end to the action on Saturday night at Sand Mountain Amphitheater in Albertville, Alabama. Umphrey’s was able to play their full set before the inclement weather forced moe. to call it a night after just five songs.
The first leg of the tour concluded in Ryan Stasik’s current hometown of Charleston, South Carolina on Sunday. moe. opened with a set heavy on staples, including “Spine Of A Dog,” “Mar-DeMa,” “Seat Of My Pants” and “Blue Jeans Pizza.” The sextet also performed the recently revived “Where Does The Time Go?,” uncorked an adventurous “Recreational Chemistry” and ended their time on stage by pairing Traffic’s “Light Up Or Leave Me Alone” with “Plane Crash.”
A special performance came from “Radio’s On” in between sets. The trio consisting of UM and moe. crew members made their debut with a cover of Weezer’s “Undone (The Sweater Song).”
Umphrey’s McGee played the instrumental intro “You Got The Wrong Guy” before they lit into a “Puppet String” they wouldn’t conclude until the end of their set. The first portion of the song gave way to “Push The Pig,” ahead of “Small Strides” and a rare take on Steely Dan’s “Kid Charlemagne.” Next up was “1348” and an “In The Kitchen” that paved the way for “The Triple Wide,” which in turn dropped into the conclusion of “Puppet String.”
Both bands, with the exception of UM’s rhythm section, loaded the stage for a 20-minute “Moth” to kick off the encore in Charleston. All of Umphrey’s was then joined by Loughlin, Schnier and Wilson for a medley of “Make America Fuk Again” by Sturgill Simpson and ELO’s “Don’t Bring Me Down” to close the show, Southeast swing and first leg of the tour.
The moe.mentUM Tour picks back up on August 12 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Three additional Midwest shows follow to bring the trek to an end.
