Summer Camp in Chillicothe, Illinois hosted a Trey Anastasio Band performance last night on the third and final day of the annual Midwestern music festival. The Phish guitarist honored the late Gregg Allman with a debut cover performance of a classic song by The Allman Brothers Band.
“Gotta Jibboo” got the TAB first set at the Sunshine Stage underway Sunday evening. The grooves continued with renditions of “Mozambique,” Phish staple “Sand” and cover of Bob Marley’s “Soul Rebel.” A nicely jammed “Drifting” preceded a jazz-fusion explosion during “Burlap Sack And Pumps.” The set progressed with “Cayman Review,” “Curlew’s Call” and the Phish instrumental “Magilla.” The guitarist’s fretwork skills were on full display during the set closing “Money, Love And Change.”
Trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick provided powerful vocal accompaniment throughout the performance, including the second set opening “Night Speaks To A Woman.” JHA, saxophonist James Casey and trombonist Natalie Cressman added a fresh sound to Phish’s “Ocelot” which transitioned into “Valentine.” A pairing of “Plasma” with “Liquid Time” led to a jam that saw Anastasio hinting at The Allman Brothers Band’s “Midnight Rider” ahead of a full band transition into the song written by the legendary musician who passed away on Saturday.
The debut cover evolved into “Dark And Down” and the set moved along with a rocking “Simple Twist Up Dave.” Trey’s dexterity was again on display as he worked through the various complex sections of “Goodbye Head.” Bassist Tony Markellis held down the steady pulse of “Mr. Completely” as Trey conducted spontaneous instructions to keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, drummer Ray Lawton, percussionist Cyro Baptista and the horns as the ensemble presented several minutes of group improvisation. After “First Tube” brought the second set to an energetic close, TAB began their encore with a JHa-showcasing cover of “Clint Eastwood” by Gorillaz, followed by “Push On ‘Til The Day.” Trey and the horn section remained on stage for an acappella version of “The Parting Glass” to end their Summer Camp appearance.
