Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio opened a month-long acoustic tour on Tuesday night with a concert at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon. Anastasio was joined by longtime collaborator Jeff Tanski on keyboards for the bulk of the 22-song show.
The pair set the tone for the evening by kicking off the show with Phish fan favorites “Guyute” and “Wolfman’s Brother.” Other old school gems from Anastasio’s main band to make the setlist were “Taste,” “Bathtub Gin,” “Pebbles & Marbles,” “If I Could,” “Reba,” “Strange Design” and “Waste,” among others.
A surprise came early in the night when Anastasio and Tanski performed “Ray Dawn Balloon,” a gorgeous instrumental they broke out in March of 2025 after the song had been shelved for over 22 years. The “Ray Dawn Balloon” in Portland marked the only other performance of the song since November 1, 2002.
While the majority of the show featured both musicians, Anastasio went solo for a five-song run early in the set and then again for three other tunes towards the end of the frame. Stories told by Trey were a prominent feature of past acoustic tours. In Portland, the guitarist discussed his history of performing in Portland, including Pacific Northwest artists Artis The Spoonman and Baby Gramps sitting in with Phish. He also shared memories of Phish debuting the “Big Ball Jam” at the Hilton Ballroom on April 22, 1992. Trey had the city wrong as the Hilton Ballroom is located in Eugene.
The night ended with a three-song encore. Anastasio was accompanied by Tanski on Phish classics “Dirt,” “Stash” and “Tweezer Reprise” to punctuate the evening.
Trey Anastasio pulls into Seattle tonight for a concert at the Paramount Theatre. Anastasio and Tanski will be on the road through June 24, the second of two nights at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York.
