Throwback Thursday | Herbie Hancock With Widespread Panic

Earlier today, we hipped you to newly-surfaced video of one of the best sit-ins in Umphrey’s McGee history. What we love about Luther Dickinson’s appearance with UM at Summer Camp ’13 was the perfect song choice. The same could be said of the tunes Widespread Panic selected to perform with special guest Herbie Hancock at Bonnaroo 2005.

Panic’s legendary June 12, 2005 performance at The Farm in Manchester, Tennessee not only saw the band joined by Herbie Hancock, but Bob Weir, Cody Dickinson, Luther Dickinson, Robert Randolph, Col. Bruce Hampton and Derrick Freeman also shared the stage with the Georgia rockers at points during the set. But for today we want to focus on the one-time-only pairing of Widespread Panic and Herbie Hancock.

Hancock, one of the best keyboardists to ever grace the Earth, was on hand to perform with his Headhunters ensemble at Bonnaroo 2005 -one of the last ‘Roos that focused on jam acts. Herbie emerged to lend a hand on the trifecta of “You Should Be Glad,” “Arleen” and “Life During Wartime.” Just as with the UM/Luther version of “Dear Lord” we mentioned earlier, “Arleen” was the perfect choice for Hancock to sit in on. The keyboardist shows off his massive talents over the course of 13 magical minutes.

Ten of those minutes were filmed by CapturedAlive and show what Herbie brought to the table including a jaw-dropping call-and-response segment with Panic bassist Dave Schools. Take a look:

We highly recommend listening to the whole set over at PanicStream.
