Summer Camp Sessions | Umphreys & Luther – Dear Lord

One of the more underrated and underused songs in Umphrey’s McGee’s vast repertoire is the classic instrumental “Dear Lord.” The song is one of the first originals played by Umphrey’s McGee in 1998, but it has only appeared a total of 43 times at the 2,000+ shows the group has performed. It’s basic, but glorious, chord progression leaves plenty of room for a soloist, so it was a fine song choice for a guest appearance by Luther Dickinson at last year’s Summer Camp Music Festival.

Umphrey’s take on “Dear Lord” featuring Luther Dickinson from Summer Camp ’13 is featured in the latest installment of the Jay Blakesberg-directed Summer Camp Sessions video series. The North Mississippi Allstar and Umphrey’s use the basic “Dear Lord” progression as a launching point but soon move the jam in a more rocking and powerful direction. Watch how it went down:
