Tomorrow (Saturday, April 22), Third Man Books will release a special edition of a new tome entitled The Blue Series: The Story Behind The Color, Volume One in celebration of Record Store Day. A standard edition of the 282-page book, which details the story behind the Jack White-produced Blue Series 7″ singles recorded in The Blue Room at Third Man Records, is due on June 6.
The special edition of The Blue Series: The Story Behind The Color, Volume One will be available on Saturday at Third Man Records storefronts and select record stores. Only 500 copies have been made and they have all been signed by the book’s editor (and Third Man executive) Ben Blackwell, and include a 7″ (pressed on exclusive blue vinyl at Third Man Pressing in Detroit) with unreleased Blue Session tracks from First Aid Kit and Gibby Haynes. The standard edition will go up for sale at bookstores throughout the country and will include the 7″ on black vinyl. Both editions feature a 10-song Blue Series sampler put together by Blackwell and an introduction penned by Rolling Stone journalist David Fricke.
Third Man Records’ Blue Series was masterminded by Jack White for the label he founded in 2009. His idea was simply to issue 7″ 45rpm singles all recorded in the same studio, with the same producer (White) with photos taken in the same locale (Third Man Records’ onsite Blue Room) and manufactured at the same pressing plant (United Record Pressing, a stone’s throw from TMR’s offices). Forty singles have been issued thus far featuring a wide array of artists including Beck, Tom Jones, Stephen Colbert and the Insane Clown Posse.
