The Avett Brothers Debut Michael Kiwanuka Cover
By Scott Bernstein Sep 16, 2015 • 10:50 am PDT

British soul singer Michael Kiwanuka was one of the most buzzed about musicians of the early ’10s and for good reason. The British soul singer’s 2012 debut full-length, Home Again, sounds both classic and fresh at the same time. Kiwanuka’s LP simultaneously evokes the best of classic soul while calling attention to a new voice on the scene. The Avett Brothers aren’t exactly the first act we would expect to cover Kiwanuka, but they have added a gorgeous rendition of “I’m Getting Ready,” a song off Home Again that also served as title track of the soul singer’s 2011 EP, to their repertoire.
The Avett Brothers debuted their take on “I’m Getting Ready” this past Friday night at Burruss Auditorium in Blacksburg, Virginia and have since played the tune two additional times. Seth Avett does a marvelous job with the vocals on “I’m Getting Ready” and the band’s instrumentation fits the cover like a glove.
