Last night Temple of the Dog concluded a two-night stand at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. The group celebrating their 25th anniversary played covers by Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie, each marking a debut on the band’s first-ever tour.
Temple Of The Dog’s main set was similar to other nights on the tour, opening with “Say Hello 2 Heaven” from their 1991 self-titled album. Bassist Jeff Ament and guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron who performs with both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, also offered takes on “Hunger Strike” along with the other songs that make up their lone LP. Ament and Gossard’s former band Mother Love Bone was also well represented with renditions of several of their originals such as “Stardog Champion” and “Stargazer.”
Following “Hunger Strike” the band debuted a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Baby (Land of the New Rising Sun),” which McCready, Ament, Cameron and Cornell recorded as M.A.C.C. for a 1993 Hendrix tribute album. Later, TOTD dropped a debut cover of David Bowie’s “Holy Holy” in the midst of a covers-filled encore that also saw performances of songs by Syd Barrett, Led Zeppelin, The Cure and Black Sabbath. As expected, the band returned for a second encore to close out the show with their “All Night Thing.”
