Tedeschi Trucks Band brought their Deuces Wild Tour to Prince‘s hometown of Minneapolis this past weekend. Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks‘ ensemble paid tribute to the late iconic musician on Friday by debuting a reimagined cover of “1999,” fan-shot footage of which can be viewed below.
Tedeschi Trucks Band rolled out “1999” following a show opening run of originals “I Want More,” “Hear My Dear” and “Anyhow.” Mike Mattison stepped to the center of the stage to handle lead vocals on the inventive cover debut. The band broke down “1999” from its traditional form and played it as a slow and swampy blues dirge. Co-bandleaders Tedeschi and Trucks traded hot licks before the premiere ended.

“1999” is the title track from Prince’s 1982 album. The breakthrough LP was the first he recorded with his band the Revolution. Prince scored a hit with the song railing against nuclear proliferation and performed the song frequently in concert before his untimely death in 2016.
Friday was the TTB’s first of two consecutive shows at the Minneapolis Armory featuring support from Margo Price. Margo finally sat in with the 12-piece band on night one in Minneapolis after spending the previous 10 days on the road as the opener. Price lent a hand on a two-song run honoring another legendary artist from Minnesota, Bob Dylan. The TTB was joined by the singer-songwriter for Dylan classics “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and “Down In The Flood” late in the set.
