Tedeschi Trucks Band Welcomes Nels Cline, Amy Helm & Luther Dickinson At Beacon Theatre
The Tedeschi Trucks Band continued their ninth annual Beacon Theatre residency in New York City on Tuesday with help from special guests Nels Cline, Amy Helm and Luther Dickinson. Last night was the group’s third show of the six they will play at the historic Upper West Side venue this year.
Dickinson and Helm opened the evening with their Capitol Sun Rays project, which also features Grahame Lesh on bass and Birds Of Chicago. The TTB then performed one long set that included 13 songs and was followed by a two-song encore. Up first for the 12-piece band was a string of originals: “I Want More,” “Do I Look Worried,” “All The World” and “Part Of Me.” Wilco guitarist Nels Cline was the first guest of the evening as he added to a cover of Derek & The Dominos’ “Bell Bottom Blues” and the original “Idle Wind.” The TTB debuted their version of “Bell Bottom Blues” in August at the Lockn’ festival as part of a complete performance of Layla & Other Love Songs with Trey Anastasio. Last night marked their first performance of the song since Lockn’.
Another special moment came after Cline’s sit-in when Luther Dickinson and Derek Trucks went acoustic for a trio performance of T-Bone Walker’s “Mean Old World” featuring Susan Tedeschi on vocals for the end of the song. The rest of the TTB returned to the stage after the cover debut to join Susan, Derek and Luther for takes on “Joyful Noise” and “Key To The Highway.” The 12-piece then went at it alone to end the set with “Shame,” The Allman Brothers Band classic “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’,” “Made Up Mind” and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “I Pity The Fool.”
Amy Helm, Grahame Lesh and Allison Russell augmented the Tedeschi Trucks Band on Bob Dylan’s “Going, Going, Gone” to start last night’s encore. The TTB then said farewell with “Get What You Deserve” from Derek’s DTB days featuring Helm. On Wednesday, the group returns to the Beacon with opener John Moreland before closing out the residency on Friday and Saturday.
