Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to the road on Friday to kick off their 2023 with the first in a series of concerts in Florida. Friday’s show at Fort Myers’ Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall included TTB’s premiere rendition of the Freddie Hubbard-recorded classic jazz instrumental “Mr. Clean.”
Written by Weldon Irvine, “Mr. Clean” originally appeared on Freddie Hubbard’s 1971 album, Straight Life. Tedeschi Trucks Band delivered their initial take on the song as the penultimate number of the first set in Fort Myers. Co-bandleader guitarist Derek Trucks utilized slide for a fierce solo and to connect with Ephraim Owens on the song’s main theme. Owens took a wild solo of his own towards the end of the song. “Mr. Clean” saw action again to close Saturday’s show at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater.

The rest of Friday’s tour opener in Fort Myers saw the 12-piece ensemble go heavy on material from I Am The Moon, a series of four studio albums released last summer. I: Crescent was represented by the opening trifecta of “Hear My Dear,” “Fall In” and “I Am The Moon,” while III. The Fall gems “Yes We Will,” “Gravity” and “Emmaline” each made the setlist at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Center. Additionally, II. Ascension’s “So Long Savior” kicked off the second set and IV. Farewell’s “Soul Sweet Song” was the penultimate number of the second set.
“Mr. Clean” wasn’t the only cover played during Friday’s first set, as TTB also took on Derek & The Dominos’ “Bell Bottom Blues” and The Allman Brothers Band’s Eat A Peach classic “Stand Back.” The evening’s second set included a take on Blind Joe Williams’ “Outside Woman Blues,” while Susan Tedeschi began the encore by teaming with keyboardist Gabe Dixon on a gorgeous version of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” before the rest of the band reemerged for the evening’s “Show Me” (Joe Tex) finale.
