Sunday was the final day of the 2017 installment of the SweetWater 420 Fest at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. Happy Ending Productions organized the event for sponsoring host SweetWater Brewing which featured four stages and an “Experience Tent.” Despite at times heavy rain, the 420 Fest proceeded in the heart of the ATL. Jam scene favorites The Werks, Dark Star Orchestra, Lettuce, Ween and Widespread Panic were among those who performed on Sunday.
The main SweetWater Stage hosted Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra in the early afternoon. DSO played an elective set which featured a “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower” sequence and came to a close with “Sugar Magnolia” > “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad.” Next up on the main stage was Ween. The five-piece took requests as drummer Claude Coleman Jr. led “Put The Coke On My Dick” and later the group played “I Gots A Weasel” by the drummer’s request. Ween stuck mostly to heavy-rotation staples including “Roses Are Free,” “Piss Up A Rope” and “Buckingham Green.”
Panic brought the action at the festival to its conclusion with a pair of career-spanning sets. A “Disco” > “Arleen” > “One Arm Steve” one-two punch opened a first set that also featured favorites “Airplane” and “Space Wrangler,” among others. The second set began with a cover of “For What It’s Worth” and was highlighted by a “Driving Song” that saw the band work in Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime,” a “Drums” section and “Tail Dragger.” Widespread Panic tipped their hat towards the 420 theme with an encore that included a take on Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me.”
