Sturgill Simpson will release a new album, The Ballad Of Dood And Juanita, digitally and on CD on August 20 with a vinyl release planned for December 3. The concept LP is the celebrated singer-songwriter’s third album in 12 months following two volumes of his Cuttin’ Grass series.
Simpson enlisted the same group of musicians who played on Cuttin’ Grass for The Ballad Of Dood And Juanita along with Willie Nelson for the track “Juanita.” Written and recorded in less than a week, the narrative album is “a simple tale of either redemption or revenge,” Sturgill said in a press release.

“I just wanted to write a story—not a collection of songs that tell a story, but an actual story, front to back,” Simpson explained. He further detailed the 10-track LP as a “rollercoaster ride through all the styles of traditional country and bluegrass and mountain music that I love, including gospel and a cappella.”
