The String Cheese Incident hit Houston for the first time since 1998 on Saturday. To mark their return to the largest city in Texas, SCI unveiled their new “Living Room” acoustic set to kick off the concert at the House Of Blues.
The “Living Room” set saw the band seated at the front of the stage: Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar), Michael Kang (acoustic mandolin/fiddle), Keith Moseley (electric bass), Michael Travis (bongos, congas), Kyle Hollingsworth (piano) and Jason Hann (cajón).
The sextet began the show with the instrumental “The Road Home” followed by a fitting “Texas Town.” Cheese also offered stripped-down renditions of “Eye Know Why,” David Grisman‘s “Eat My Dust,” “Best Feeling” and the Moseley-led classic “Joyful Sound,” which saw Kang switching over to his five-string electric mandolin. The “Living Room” set came to a close with Kyle’s usually electronica-tinged “Rosie.”
The electric second set saw SCI getting things underway with “Shine.” The second frame also featured a new song debut, “Fête Tama,” a synth-infused instrumental showcasing SCI’s ability to marry bluegrass sounds and electronic elements.
Cheese then paired up “Shantytown” and “Beautiful” before embarking on a seamless set-closing sequence of “Big Reveal,” “I Know You Rider,” “Stir It Up” and a return to “I Know You Rider.” The band came back out to encore with “BollyMunster.”
