The String Cheese Incident kicked off their Just Keep Spinning Summer Tour at Stable Hall in San Antonio on Thursday. The jamgrass outfit took the opportunity to unveil a new song, “The Lightning Sky.”
SCI’s Bill Nershi, Michael Kang, Keith Moseley, Kyle Hollingsworth, Michael Travis and Jason Hann launched the show by making their way through the audience with percussion instruments. After taking the stage, Cheese got things underway with “Miss Brown’s Teahouse.”
Toward the end of the first set, SCI debuted “The Lightning Sky.” Led by bassist Keith Moseley, the bluegrass-tinged song is classic Cheese complete with a nod to another classic, “Restless Wind,” during the chorus. The song also contained a characteristically spirited organ solo from keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth and instrumental harmonies from Michael Kang and Billy Nershi on electric mandolin and guitar respectively.
SCI then wrapped the first frame with a pairing of “Rollover” and “Valley Of The Jig.” Set two began with “Carnival” and also included a cover of Weather Report’s “Black Market,” which led into one of the band’s signature songs, “Jellyfish.”
The second set came to a close with “Desert Dawn.” The String Cheese Incident returned to encore with the Peter Rowan favorite “Midnight Moonlight,” which references San Antonio.
Livestreams of SCI’s Just Keep Spinning Tour opener and additional Texas shows are available via nugs. The band continues their mini-tour through Texas tonight in Austin. Scroll on for photos, the setlist and video of the unusual entrance from San Antonio:
