Stormy Mondays | Vintage Phish From Eugene 1991

Most every time I find myself dipping into the first decade of Phish for any period of time, I also find myself fondly returning to the quartet’s April 4, 1991 performance in Eugene, OR. It’s a favorite show not because I was there, but because it was one of my very first tapes during my earliest Phish experiences, when I only had a few and didn’t know where to get more. I spent hours and hours driving around back country roads with this show as my soundtrack, so this week we’re going to give a listen to some of my favorite moments. 
To begin we have the second set opener, “The Curtain” > “Runaway Jim” followed by “Guelah Papyrus.” I love the perfect balance of tight precision and looseness of groove on display here, the fun effortlessness with which they cut through the material. Then, from the end of the set, there’s a memorable “Love You” complete with band introductions into “Big Black Furry Creatures From Mars,” and finally, from early in the first set, a great version of “You Enjoy Myself” with a particularly good vocal jam.
