Stormy Mondays | Steve Kimock Solo Duo Trio

Back in September, there was a last minute announcement that Steve Kimock would be playing a Friday night gig, which was exceedingly rare in a year when the guitar monk’s attention was focused on RatDog. However, despite being an under-the-radar gig, or maybe because of that fact, it turned out to be a truly special show.

What we have featured in this week’s Stormy Mondays is the first 50 minutes or so of the first set, which opens with Steve telling a story about being invited to play with Jorma (Kaukonen) and Jack (Casady) -a situation that blossomed into a regular guest spot a couple years ago wherein the guitar master was given the stage mid set for 10-15 minutes of solo acoustic improvisation each night. The story melts into what Kimock people erroneously call a raga, a gorgeous freeform exploration that gathers a shape before it ends. Next up Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz joins for a beautiful version of the lost SKB classic “In Reply” and he sticks around to add vocals to “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and a pretty stellar version of “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry.” John Morgan Kimock also joins on drums on the latter tune. This is some of warmest, wonderfulest Kimock music I’ve ever heard. As always, enjoy!
