Star Of Viral Video Gets Legal Break To Play With Matisyahu

Matisyahu was recently in Hawaii, when he stopped by a coffee shop and noticed a busker performing on ukulele. The uke player, named Clint Alama, was playing the reggae star’s “One Day” as Matis stood to the side and sang along. Matisyahu’s bassist Stu Brooks filmed the scene as the singer introduced himself to Alama, who at first didn’t realize he was talking to the song’s original performer. This Friday, Matisyahu will play the Hollywood Palladium and invited Alama to sit-in, but there was a legal wrinkle.

As the Associated Press reports, there was a warrant out for Clint Alama’s arrest following a probation violation. Thankfully, Maui County Prosecuting Attorney John Kim saw the video and looked into the situation. A deal was worked out in which Alama would turn himself in, but would be allowed to travel to Los Angeles to perform “One Day” in L.A. with Matisyahu.

For now, Clint Alama is currently in jail at the Maui Community Correctional Center. On Thursday night he is expected to take a red-eye to L.A. and will sit-in on Friday night before returning to jail (unless he posts $50,000 bail). “The court has allowed him this one opportunity of a lifetime,” Kim told the AP adding that “if Alama gets into trouble or doesn’t return, a judge could send him to prison.”
