The Fillmore in San Francisco hosted the all-star Surrealistic Superjam Summer of Love 50th Anniversary concert on Tuesday night. Many talented Bay Area musicians performed songs from Jefferson Airplane’s 1967 LP Surrealistic Pillow and other beloved tunes from the era.

Members of ALO, Midnight North, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, Jefferson Starship, Phil Lesh & Friends, Moonalice, The Brothers Comatose, California Honeydrops, Cosmic Twang, Doobie Decibel System, New Monsoon, Tea Leaf Green, Tarnation, Terrapin Family Band and others all came together for the collaborative night at The Fillmore.

Midnight North’s Grahame Lesh and Moonalice/Doobie Decibel System’s Roger McNamee led the core band through the opening run of the traditional Grateful Dead staple “Cold Rain & Snow” and Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” that also featured Pete Sears. Gramblers Deren Ney and Dave Mulligan, along with Midnight North’s Elliott Peck and Terrapin/Lesh regular Scott Guberman were in charge of “Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay.” Vocalist Paula Frazer was on hand to lead the first set closing Surrealistic Pillow favorite “White Rabbit.”

Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz and New Monsoon’s Bo Carper started the second half with the Surrealistic Pillow instrumental “Embryonic Journey” followed by Lesh, Peck and Mulligan fronting the ensemble on The Mamas & The Papas’ “California Dreamin.’” The set also featured Nicki Bluhm singing the Surrealistic Pillow cut “Today” followed by a collectively led “Somebody To Love.” The finale featured over 20 people on stage for a rendition of The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love.”
