Soulive Welcomes Guests For ‘Rubber Soulive’ & More At Brooklyn Bowl

Jazz-rock trio Soulive continued their eighth installment of Bowlive on Thursday night at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City. The band welcomed guests, both expected and unexpected, as part of a show that started with a performance of songs from their Rubber Soulive tribute to The Beatles.

Soulive used their first set on Thursday to run through a bevy of Beatles classics they recorded for Rubber Soulive in 2010. Guitarist Eric Krasno, keyboardist Neal Evans and drummer Alan Evans began the evening without any guests for “Drive My Car,” “Revolution,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” “In My Life” and “Come Together.” Hawaiian guitarist Ron Artis II was the trio’s first guest of the night as he joined in on “Something” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” to end the opening frame.

Artis was also on hand to help Soulive begin the second set with versions of his own originals “The Truth” and “The Pit.” Next up was an appearance from Austin-based guitarist Doyle Bramhall II. Doyle led Soulive and bassist Adam Minkoff through three of his tunes: “Keep You Dreamin’,” “The Veil” and “Mama Can’t Help You” ahead of a collaboration on Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book gem “I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever).” For the encore, Soulive welcomed surprise guest Kamasi Washington on saxophone for “Povo” and ended the night with a romp through “Stone Free.”

Soulive’s Bowlive VIII run continues on Friday with special guests Antwaun Stanley and the Snarky Puppy Horns.
