Soulive Teams With John Scofield, Marcus King & The Shady Horns At Brooklyn Bowl

Jazz-rock trio Soulive continued an eight-show Bowlive residency at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on Thursday night. While the band was joined by The Shady Horns and jazz great John Scofield, young guitarist Marcus King also made his Bowlive debut.

In keeping with tradition, Soulive kicked off the evening without any guests as they rolled through “Steppin’,” “One In Seven” and “Rudy’s Way.” The Shady Horns of Eric “Benny” Bloom and Ryan Zoidis then augmented the trio from the rest of the original-focused first set. Last night’s second set was a “Sco-Live” affair that saw Soulive aided by John Scofield throughout.

The Sco-Live set began with an instrumental cover of The Dramatics’ “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get.” Scofield then augmented the trio on “Nealization” and his own “Kelpers.” Next, Marcus King emerged to add to triple-guitar covers of the Allman Brothers Band’s “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and B.B. King’s “Sweet Little Angel.” King left Soulive and Scofield to conclude the set with “Boozer” and “Hey Joe.”

For the encore, Soulive along with Scofield, King and The Shady Horns tackled Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Turn On Your Lovelight.” Marcus handled vocals on “Lovelight.” Tonight, Soulive will be joined by Marcus King, George Porter Jr. and The Shady Horns at Brooklyn Bowl.
