The Smashing Pumpkins served as the musical guest on last night’s The Late Late Show With James Corden for a performance of their classic song “Today.” Additionally, members of the band chatted with host James Corden and revealed they are making a 33-song triple album rock opera.
Guitarist/vocalist Billy Corgan, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and guitarist James Iha gathered around The Late Late Show bar and spoke about their upcoming fall tour with Jane's Addiction. Tickets for The Smashing Pumpkins tour with Jane’s Addiction are on sale now. Corden then said he heard a rumor that the band’s next album is a “rock opera,” which Corgan confirmed. “It’s a 33-song triple album concept,” Billy confirmed. “We’re very excited. It’s sort of a return to form. It’s a sequel to our Mellon Collie (And The Infinite Sadness) album from 1995 and our Machina album from 2000.”
James Corden noted The Smashing Pumpkins chose to play a classic song on the program. “It’s the song ‘Today.’ As many people would know it’s the song where I play the ice cream truck driver [in the video],” explained Corgan. “I wrote the song in a very depressing moment in my life and I knew I was going to see you and that made me sad and then I thought we’ll play the song,” Billy joked. “Today” appeared on Smashing Pumpkins’ 1993 album Siamese Dream.
