The Smashing Pumpkins was formed 30 years ago in Chicago. The band broke up in 2000, but frontman Billy Corgan brought a different lineup on the road starting in 2007 and has recorded albums and embarked on the occasional tour ever since. Following the expiration of a countdown on the group’s website, Smashing Pumpkins have announced a series of shows featuring most of the original lineup.
Corgan will hit the road with original SP drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and guitarist James Iha as well as more recent addition to the group: guitarist Jeff Schroeder. Original bassist D’arcy Wretzky will not participate in the reunion, a situation that went public in a big way this past week. Iha first reunited with the Corgan at a few shows in 2016, while Chamberlin has been behind the kit for Smashing Pumpkins since 2015.

Smashing Pumpkins are expected to focus on classic material from their ’90s heyday during this “Shiny & Oh So Bright” series of concerts including tracks from Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness, Adore and Machina/The Machines Of God. The tour begins in Glendale, Arizona on July 12 and then makes stopes in Oklahoma City, Austin, Houston, Dallas, Nashville, Louisville, Atlanta, Miami, Tampa, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Uncasville and Boston to close out July.
In August, Smashing Pumpkins will play New York City, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Montreal, Toronto, Columbus, Chicago, Kansas City, Indianapolis, St. Paul, Omaha, Sioux Falls, Seattle, Portland, Oakland, Sacramento and Los Angeles. The tour is currently slated to end in September with visits to San Diego, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver and Boise.

“Some 30 years ago, as The Smashing Pumpkins, James Iha and I began a musical journey in the cramped rear bedroom of my Father’s house. And so it’s magic to me that we’re able to coalesce once more around the incredible Jimmy Chamberlin, to celebrate those songs we’ve made together,” shared Corgan in a statement. “This show and staging will be unlike any we’ve ever done, and will feature a set unlike any we’ve ever played. For if this is a chance at a new beginning, we plan on ushering it in with a real bang,” said Corgan. Tickets go on sale Friday, February 23.
