Slash’s S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival hit Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre on Saturday. The Guns N’ Roses guitarist welcomed The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson for a rendition of “The Pusher.”
Slash’s S.E.R.P.E.N.T. — Solidarity, Engagement, Restore, Peace, Equality N’ Tolerance — Festival is a tribute to the blues featuring an ace band of guitarist Tash Neal, bassist Johnny Griparic, keyboardist Teddy “ZigZag” Andreadis and drummer Michael Jerome. Les Stroud, of Discovery Channel’s Survivorman fame, has also been playing harmonica on select songs.

The set is full of blues classics including Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor,” Booker T. & the MGs’ “Born Under a Band Sign,” Freddie King’s “Big Legged Woman,” Robert Johnson’s “Cross Road Blues,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Stone Free,” Bob Dylan’s “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry” and Elmore James’ “Shake Your Money Maker.” Several of the songs appear on Slash’s new album, Orgy of the Damned.
The show also includes Hoyt Axton’s “The Pusher,” which was popularized by Steppenwolf who recorded the song in 1968 with it subsequently appearing on the soundtrack for counterculture classic Easy Rider.
Robinson joined Slash for “The Pusher,” Chris appears on the Orgy of the Damned version, as the ninth song in the guitarist’s headline set during the L.A. stop on the traveling S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival. Chris delivered a typically stellar vocal performance on the swampy rocker and also busted out the harmonica followed by a tasty solo from Slash.
