Sigur Rós shared the first single, “Blóðberg,” from their forthcoming album, marking their first new song in seven years. The track arrived with a music video directed by Johan Renck (Madonna, Robyn, Beyoncé).
Sigur Rós — frontman Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson, bassist Georg Hólm and newly retunred multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson — announced their new, Abbey Road-recorded album in March, although they have yet to share the title or release date. The Icelandic trio did however confirm a slate of 2023 tour dates in Europe and North America where they’ll be accompanied by the London Contemporary Orchestra and the Wordless Music Orchestra respectively.
The band also enlisted the LCO to perform on their new album, Sigur Rós’ first in nearly a decade following 2013’s Kveikur, which arrived shortly after Sveinsson departed the band in 2012. Co-produced by Sigur Rós and Paul Corley, “Blóðberg,” features the London Contemporary Orchesta. Acclaimed director Johan Renck — who also captained the HBO limited series Chernobyl — helmed the accompanying visual for the slow-building, seven-minute song.
“I feel as nihilistic as one could regarding the future. We are powerless against our own stupidities,” Renck stated. “Some aspects of this came to merge with my impressions of the themes of ‘Blóðberg.’ The music becoming a score to my own miserable thoughts, giving them beauty as only music can.”
