Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory announced their self-titled debut album, due out February 7, 2025 via Jagjaguwar. The acclaimed singer-songwriter and her band also shared a music video for the lead single, “Afterlife.”
Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory marks the first time Van Etten has cut a record in full collaboration with her band: drummer Jorge Balbi, bassist Devra Hoff and Teeny Lieberson who adds synth, piano, guitar and vocals. Marta Salogni (Bjork, Bon Iver, Animal Collective) produced the album.
Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory grew out of rehearsal sessions Sharon and band held in the desert for an upcoming tour.
“For the first time in my life, I asked the band if we could just jam,” Van Etten recalled. “Words that have never come out of my mouth – ever! But I loved all the sounds we were getting. I was curious—what would happen? In an hour, we wrote two songs that ended up becoming ‘I Can’t Imagine’ and ‘Southern Life.’”
Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory captured their self-titled debut at Eurythmics’ former studio, The Church, where producer Marta Salogni was instrumental in bringing the LP to fruition.
Sharon touted Salogni’s “love of synths and sense of adventure” and her ability to embrace “the darkness and the unique sounds we had honed in the writing process.”
Van Etten also gave a glimpse into her frame of mind while making the album:
“Sometimes it’s exciting, sometimes it’s scary, sometimes you feel stuck. It’s like every day feels a little different – just being at peace with whatever you’re feeling and whoever you are and how you relate to people in that moment. If I can just keep a sense of openness while knowing that my feelings change every day, that is all I can do right now. That and try to be the best person I can be while letting other people be who they are and not taking it personally and just being. I’m not there, but I’m trying to be there every day.”
Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory previewed the record with the music video for lead single “Afterlife,” directed by Susu Laroche and featuring footage of the band debuting songs from the album at London’s intimate 100 Club. Watch below:
