Phish took the stage at Albany’s Knickerbocker Arena, known at the time as the Pepsi Arena and currently as the MVP Arena, for the first of two shows to cap their historic Fall Tour 1997 25 years ago today. JamBase editor Scott Bernstein dives into the concert as the guest on the latest episode of JamBase partner Osiris Media’s Undermine podcast.
Season 4 of Undermine has featured show-by-show examinations of the now-legendary “Phish Destroys America” run following profiles of 25 key 1990s Phish shows. Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, Team JamBase’s Andy Kahn and JamBase co-founder Andy Gadiel have been among this season’s guests.
Bernstein returns to Undermine following a previous appearance this season to discuss Phish's November 22, 1997 concert at Hampton Coliseum. Today, Scotty shares memories from night one in Albany with Phish lyricist Tom Marshall and journalist/author Benjy Eisen.
Tom, Benjy and Scotty start by discussing the history of the Grateful Dead at The Knick and past Phish runs at the venue. The co-hosts and their guest then began rolling through the highlights from the show that was held on this date in 1997 including a standout “Tweezer,” wild pairing of “Saw It Again” and “Piper” and well-jammed “Prince Caspian.”
Phish closed out the night with a double encore of “Guyute” and “Run Like An Antelope,” which Marshall, Eisen and Bernstein put into the context of Fall ’97 encores. Other topics hit upon were Tom’s lyrics for “Swept Away,” fans’ feelings towards “Prince Caspian” and more. Watch today’s episode of Undermine featuring Scott Bernstein below:
