San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre will celebrate its grand reopening in early 2026 with an eight-show residency from Sam Smith. Smith’s “To Be Free: San Francisco” run will take place February 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18, 20 and 21.
Under the stewardship of the Bay Area’s Another Planet Entertainment, the Castro Theatre received a $41 million renovation and restoration. Press materials further described the return of the culturally important theatre.
This milestone marks the return of a beloved cultural landmark to full operation and ushers in a new era of programming that bridges cinematic tradition, live music, comedy, community gatherings and service to the LGBTQ+ communities for whom the venue is a treasured asset.

“Our goal is to activate and re-energize the building with equity, inclusion, and community at the forefront,” CEO and Co-Founder of Another Planet Entertainment Gregg Perloff stated. “We look forward to contributing to the vibrancy and economic health of the Castro while honoring its legacy as an LGBTQ+ landmark and cultural anchor.”
Sam Smith is set to bring his “To Be Free: San Francisco” residency, taking its name from Smith’s recent single “To Be Free,” to the Castro Theatre as the first event in the newly rejuvenated space, including “upgraded HVAC, sound, lighting, video systems, additional public restrooms, and expanded ADA accessibility.”
Tickets for Sam Smith’s “To Be Free: San Francisco” run go on sale Tuesday, October 7 at 10 a.m. PT.
