Ryan Adams To Release Bruce Hornsby-Inspired Album In November

Prolific singer-songwriter Ryan Adams will release his 16th studio album on November 4. The yet-to-be-titled LP was inspired by ’80s rockers including Bruce Hornsby, AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen. Entertainment Weekly revealed the news as part of a preview of fall albums.

Ryan Adams recorded “quite literally 80” songs for the project or “probably more,” but with the help of famed producer Don Was was able to whittle down that figure to a dozen or so tracks. “I didn’t know if I knew what I was doing,” Adams told EW. “So when you’re in a situation like that, you gotta get Gandalf—you gotta call Don Was!”

Besides Hornsby, AC/DC and Springsteen, other influences on the LP Adams mentioned are Bachman-Turner Overdrive, ELO and The Smiths, especially when it comes to “multicolored guitar tone moments.” Ryan also discussed the lyrical content with EW, “I’m taking all the cool, big questions I’m asking on this record, then flipping it over, and then flipping it back to Side-A and you still have more questions…I’m a relatively convoluted soul creatively.” He added, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I think the challenge for me—the Everest peak, for me—is to tell this story in 11 songs, to tell this part of my life in 11 songs. How do I make a real distinct record where anybody listens to it and says, ‘That’s the truth from beginning to end.’ So it’s like exercise. It sucks in the beginning. But then you get into it.”
