The possibility of Ryan Adams reuniting with members of his former backing band The Cardinals has fans excited about the possibilities. Adams put out a call on Instagram looking for specific members of the project to take part in recording sessions next month. This week’s Throwback Thursday features footage of the band’s 2006 appearance on long-running live music television program Austin City Limits.
Ryan Adams, guitarist Neal Casal, bassist Catherine Popper, drummer Brad Pemberton and pedal steel wiz Jon Graboff assembled at ACL’s old home of Studio 6A on the University Of Texas campus in Austin for a performance on October 20, 2005. The set was filmed for the 31st season of Austin City Limits. An episode featuring both Ryan Adams & The Cardinals and Tift Merritt premiered on January 21, 2006.

Adams & The Cardinals released two albums in 2005 ahead of the taping: Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights. The quintet’s portion of the ACL episode focused on material from the two LPs. Jacksonville City Nights was represented by the opener “A Kiss Before I Go” as well as “Games” and “Hard Way To Fall.” Ryan also led the group through “Let It Ride,” “Now That You’re Gone” and the title track from Cold Roses. In addition, The North Carolina native performed a solo rendition of “Call Me On Your Way Back Home” from 2000’s Heartbreaker.
