Late Rush drummer Neil Peart narrated the short film, Growth Rings. Co-written by Peart and Jeremy Bout, Growth Rings was released in conjunction with DW Drums.
Peart, who died in January at the age of 67, discusses the evolution of popular music dating back to the 1930s over footage of nature interspersed with archival news broadcasts, home movies and other clips. Named after the annual rings formed inside a tree trunk, the film presents Peart talking about the drum becoming the first musical instrument played by humans. The short film also features a brief portion of Rush performing live.

A description accompanying the video reads in part:
[T]his short film honors the way in which music marks moments in our lives. Just as the life of a tree can be understood through it’s growth rings, we can look at the milestones and eras of our lives and reminiscence of the songs and bands that resonated with us during those times.
