Raw Oyster Cult :: 4.17.15 & 4.18.15 :: The Funky Biscuit :: Boca Raton, FL
Boca Raton was fortunate to receive a double dose of Raw Oyster Cult last weekend, along with a surprise late night guest. The Funky Biscuit shows followed their Thursday set at the Wanee Festival in Live Oak, Florida.

For 15+ years, South Florida was a fixture on The Radiators touring circuit. Two-to-three visits per year were the norm, which gave the extensive New Orleans ex-pat community a wonderful opportunity to reunite with friends and some of their favorite musicians. So, a two-night stand with 3/5ths of The Radiators plus John Gros (Papa Grows Funk) and Dave Pomerleau (Johnny Sketch and The Dirty Notes) was a highly anticipated and well-attended event.

On top of that, the surprise arrival of New Orleans brass band Bonerama mid-way through Friday’s second set was a special treat. They happened to be performing at one of the local casinos and hustled over to join the show once their set had concluded. Mark Mullins and his bandmates have played with The Radiators many times over the years. Their fluidness and joy in grooving with Dave Malone and the rest of Raw Oyster Cult was easy to detect.
A more in-depth sampling of their collaborations can be heard in this audio from Tipitinas in January 2005, courtesy of Archive.org.

One other highpoint was the band’s crisp and non-traditional rendition of the “New Minglewood Blues” made famous by the Grateful Dead. If you weren’t paying attention, you might not have realized what song you were hearing.
My only gripe with an otherwise magnificent weekend of Fishead music was that a handful of songs were repeated on Saturday night –something I don’t ever recall occurring during back-to-back nights of The Radiators.
